How Much Space Do You Need For A Cold Plunge At Home?

By Lauren Stacks|Published on:

Plan on about 7 feet by 3 feet for a tub style cold plunge with its chiller, and about 6 feet by 4.5 feet for a barrel with steps and clearance. Polar Monkeys' most compact tubs, the ONE and the Brainpod 2.0, are 31.5 inches wide, and the ONE needs 84 by 31.5 inches in total with its chiller placed.

Floor space is only part of it. You also need room for chiller airflow, a dedicated outlet within reach and a floor that can carry the filled weight. Here's every number you need to measure against.

All figures from polarmonkeys.com product pages, verified October 23, 2026. Weights exclude the separate chiller where the product page says so.

Every model runs on a dedicated 110V, 15 amp outlet. The Contrast Edition needs two, one for each side.

What's the smallest footprint for a cold plunge with a chiller?

It depends on whether you're short on floor area or short on length. The Barrel has the smallest tub on the floor at 34 inches across, but once you add its steps, chiller and airflow clearance, Polar Monkeys lists a 72 by 55 inch footprint. It trades floor area for height.

If you have a long, narrow spot, a tub fits better. The ONE runs 84 by 31.5 inches with its chiller placed, and the Brainpod 2.0 Standard tub is the shortest at 67 inches. Both sit just 23.5 inches high, which matters under windows or in rooms with low clearance.

How much clearance does the chiller need?

Polar Monkeys recommends leaving a couple of feet of space around the ChillX chiller so it can move air freely. A chiller boxed into a tight corner has to work harder to hold temperature. Also leave room to reach the drain and the fill point without moving the tub.

For indoor versus outdoor tradeoffs, power and drainage, see our guide to picking the right spot for each model.

Will a cold plunge fit in a garage gym?

Almost always. A one car garage bay is typically wider and far longer than any home plunge, so space is rarely the limit. The bigger questions are drainage, heat buildup from the chiller in a closed space and winter temperature swings, which we cover in detail in our post on putting a cold plunge in a garage.

Measure your clear floor area after equipment, not the whole bay. Racks, benches and a parked car eat more room than people expect.

Can a deck or balcony hold a cold plunge?

Footprint is easy. Weight is the real test. Filled, Polar Monkeys plunges range from 819 pounds for the Brainpod 2.0 Standard to 2,349 pounds for the Contrast Edition, all concentrated in a small area. Check the structure before you buy, not after.

Our guide to deck and floor load limits walks through filled weights, load ratings and when to bring in a structural engineer.

Barrel or tub: which takes less floor space?

A barrel takes less floor, a tub takes less height. The Barrel's 34 inch tub stands 41.5 inches tall and you sit upright, while the tubs are 30 to 31.5 inches wide, 23.5 to 24 inches high and you lie back. Choose by the shape of your room first, then by how you like to plunge.

We compare comfort, immersion and cleaning in more depth in barrel style vs rectangular tubs.

How do you measure your space before you buy?

  • Measure clear floor length and width, then subtract any door swing.

  • Add a couple of feet around the chiller for airflow.

  • Confirm a dedicated 110V, 15 amp outlet is close by (two for the Contrast Edition).

  • Find your drain path: a floor drain, a door to the outside or a hose route.

  • Check that the floor or deck can carry the filled weight from the table above.

  • Measure every doorway, hallway and stair the tub has to pass through on delivery day.

Frequently asked questions

What's the smallest cold plunge you can buy?

In the Polar Monkeys lineup, the Brainpod 2.0 Standard has the shortest tub at 67 by 31.5 inches, and the ONE needs 84 by 31.5 inches total with its chiller placed. The Barrel has the smallest tub on the floor at 34 inches across, but needs about 72 by 55 inches with its steps, chiller and clearance.

Can a cold plunge fit in an apartment?

Space usually isn't the problem, since the ONE and Brainpod 2.0 are only 31.5 inches wide. Weight and building rules are. Filled, they weigh 819 to 867 pounds, so check with your landlord or building management and confirm floor load and water access before you buy.

How much space does the Contrast Edition need?

The Contrast Edition lists a total footprint of 158 by 33.75 inches, with a tub that stands 41.54 inches tall. It needs two dedicated 110V, 15 amp outlets, one for each side.

Do you need a dedicated outlet for a cold plunge?

Yes. Every Polar Monkeys home plunge requires a dedicated 110V, 15 amp outlet, and the Contrast Edition requires two.

How much clearance does a cold plunge chiller need?

Polar Monkeys recommends a couple of feet of open space around the ChillX chiller for airflow. Keep it out of tight enclosures so it doesn't have to work harder to hold temperature.
